バーミンガム市の魅力！第２部 All about Birmingham (part 2)

前の記事に、イギリスのバーミンガム市の基本知識、歴史、建築について学びましたが、今からその他の魅力的なポイントと観光地について話したいと思います。

 

観光地と言えば、11月と12月にフランクフルト・クリスマス・マーケットが開催されています。でも、フランクフルトはイギリスじゃなくて、ドイツにある町ではないでしょうか？正しいです！このマーケットはドイツ、オーストリア以外で、一番大きいドイツスタイルのクリスマスマーケットです。ドイツやオーストリアから来た売り手が多いので、プレッツェル、ドイツのソーセージ、オーストリアのシュニッツェルが食べられます。ドイツとイギリス両国の人はビールを飲むことが好きなので、マーケットにはビールが豊富にあります！他のクリスマス料理もあるし、ギフト交換の習慣もあるので、買えるギフトも多いです。メリーゴーランド、スケートリンクといったものもあります。

 

バーミンガム大学はイギリスの大学上位30位の中にあります。キャンパスはエッジバストン地区やセリー・オーク地区にあります。キャンパスは綺麗な赤いレンガのビルが多くて、一番有名なものは時計台です。学生生活は面白くて、キャンパスには様々なカフェ、ジム、運動場、緑地もあります。学生は東アジアからの人が多いです。それで、セリー・オークに中国、韓国、日本食レストランやスーパーが見られます。大学のホームページによると、バーミンガム大学の最初の日本人の学生は1906年に卒業しました。バーミンガム大学だけではなく、バーミンガム都心にはアストン大学もあります。元々は専門学校ですが、現在はバーミンガム大学と同じように上位30位にあります。それで、バーミンガムにある大学は優秀です！特に、科学についていい評判があります。

 

バーミンガム市はイギリスの多文化社会が見られる都市です。去年、バーミンガムの人口は約58％が白人、約27％がアジア人（南アジア、中国、東南アジア系の人が多い）、9％が黒人でした。宗教も多いです。多文化社会のおかげで、世界中の料理が人気です！実はインドカレーのイメージは「イギリスの国民食みたいです」！特にバーミンガムには、パキスタン系のイギリス人が多いです。「バルチ・トライアングル」という所があります。ここで、パキスタン系人はイギリススタイル「バルチ」という南アジア料理を作り出しました。それで、バルチは南アジアの料理ですが、特別なバーミンガムのスタイルもあります。「トライアングル・triangle」の意味は三角で、その土地の形です。その近所に多い南アジア料理のレストランが有名です！バーミンガム市には、チャイナタウンもあります！ 実は「バック・トゥ・バック住宅」の現場はチャイナタウンにあります！もちろん、バック・トゥ・バック住宅が建てられた時代にはチャイナタウンはありませんでした。

 

バーミンガムで私が住んでいた所はボーンビルです。昔、ボーンビルは村でしたが、１部で話したとおり、バーミンガムは産業を広げながら、市も膨らみました。ボーンビル村は「キャドバリーチョコレート」工場の周りで発展しました。現在もキャドバリー工場はまだ使われています。キャドバリーチョコレートとはイギリス製の一番人気なチョコレートで、ボーンビルで1824年に興されました。会社のキャドバリーは日本でいう明治のような会社です。設立者のジョン・キャドバリーさんは、単にチョコレートを売るだけではなく、工場労働者に質の高い住宅を提供する希望もありました。その希望に基づいて、周りのボーンビル村を建てました。現在、建てられた住宅はまだ家として使われています。でも、労働者しか住んでいないことはありません。チョコレート製造工場は私の家から、徒歩圏内にあるため、工場を通り過ぎることがよくあったのですが、通るたびにチョコのいい香りがしたのを覚えています。今キャドバリー工場は工場のみならず、テーマパークの特徴もあります。それで工場はとても人気な観光地として話題を集めています。チャーリーとチョコレート工場という映画や小説をご存知かもしれませんが、キャドバリーはそんな感じがあります！違いは、キャドバリーにはチャーリーとチョコレート工場のマジックがありません！テーマパークの中では、キャドバリーの歴史や製造工程、カカオ豆の栽培を解説や子供向け乗り物で知ることができます。それに、チョコレートの試食や自分でチョコを作ることもできます。実は、キャドバリー社のイメージカラーにあわせて、ボーンビル駅全体も紫色になっています。一番有名な製品は「デイリーミルク」というクリーミーなミルクチョコレートですが、設立場のボーンビルにちなんで名づけられたダークチョコレートも売られています。

 

都市としてバーミンガムの文化的な魅力、教育機関やモダン活動が多いですが、バーミンガムには緑地や公園も多いです。家から徒歩で3分ぐらいに公園に着きます。ボーンビル、エッジバストンやセリー・オークは全て都心の南にあり、全ての南バーミンガムの郊外には公園があります。イギリスの公園はずっと芝生と木がありますので、緑のイメージがあります。湖や池があることも普通です。岐阜公園のように、南バーミンガムはリッキー・ヒルズ・カントリー・パークがあります。２km²以上で、林があり丘陵です。岐阜市には金華山がありますが、イギリスは日本と比べて山が少なく、丘のほうが一般的です。

 

加えると、多くのイギリス人はバーミンガムとバーミンガムアクセントを責めていますが、不当だと思います！でも、意見がだんだん変わっている気がします。例えば、最近大人気なイギリスドラマ、ピーキー・ブラインダーズはバーミンガムのアクセントを見せました。バーミンガムのアクセントというのは「ブラミー・brummy」と言います。バーミンガムに生まれた人も「ブラミー」と呼ばれています。そのうえ、2022年のコモンウェルス（イギリス連邦）ゲームズの開催都市だったので、バーミンガムに訪ねる観光客が増えてきました。

All about Birmingham, England's second city (part 2)

 

In the previous part of this post, we discussed the background information of Birmingham, a city in the UK, as well as its history and architecture. During this concluding part, we will cover more information and areas in Birmingham, including tourist activities.

 

Speaking of popular tourist activities, in November and December the Frankfurt Christmas Market is held. You might be thinking, wait a minute, isn't Frankfurt a city in Germany? And you'd be correct! Birmingham's Christmas market is the largest German-style market outside of Germany and Austria, and many of the vendors are from one of these countries. You can buy German and Austrian street food such as pretzels, frankfurter and bratwurst sausages, and schnitzel. Germans and Brits have something in common: their love of beer! So unsurprisingly, lots of beer is available at the market. You can also buy other Christmassy foods and Christmas gifts. There are also other attractions such as a carousel and an ice rink.

 

The University of Birmingham is one of the UK's top 30. The campus is located in areas called Edgbaston and Selly Oak, and has many beautiful red brick buildings, the most famous of which is the clock tower. Student life thrives in the area with numerous cafes, a gym, sports fields, and green spaces on campus. Many students come from Far East Asia to study here, so Selly Oak has Chinese, Korean, and Japanese restaurants and supermarkets. According to the university's website, their first Japanese student graduated in 1906. As well as the University of Birmingham, there is another university in the city centre called Aston University. It used to be a technical school, but now also places in the top 30 universities in the UK! Evidently, the universities in Birmingham are top class, and are especially known for scientific studies.

 

Birmingham is a city which exemplifies the multicultural society of the UK. Last year, about 58% of Birmingham's population was white, about 27% were of Asian descent (particularly South Asian, Chinese, and Southeast Asian), and 9% were black. The result is a truly multicultural society in Birmingham! The city's residents also have various different religions. Thanks to this multicultural society, food from around the world is popular, and Indian curry is often seen as "Britain's national dish"! Birmingham has a particularly large population of British Pakistanis, which has given rise to an area called the "Balti Triangle". In this district, a British Pakistani created British-style balti, which is unique to Birmingham. The "Balti Triangle" got its name from the area being shaped like a triangle on maps, and the many South Asian restaurants in the area are famous! Birmingham also has a China town, and in fact the Birmingham Back to Backs are in what has since become China town!

 

The area of Birmingham I lived in is called Bournville, and as previously discussed, like most of the city's suburbs Bournville was once a village, which was then incorporated into Birmingham city with its industrial revolution era expansion. Bournville village was developed around the Cadbury chocolate factory, which is still in use today. Cadbury's is the most popular chocolate company in the UK and was founded in Bournville in 1824. The founder of the company, John Cadbury not only wanted to make chocolate, but he also wanted to ensure that his factory workers had a good standard of living, so built the surrounding Bournville village with this in mind. These houses still stand and while they are no longer lived in by only factory workers, they are still in use as homes. Cadbury's factory is within walking distance from my family home, and in the surrounding area you can smell the chocolate! Cadbury's doubles as a chocolate factory and a theme park today, as visitors can enter parts of the factory. It is reminiscent of the famous novel and film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but of course it doesn't contain the magical elements included in the story! The attractions include information on Cadbury's history, information about cocoa beans, a short ride for children, and you can also receive chocolate samples and make your own chocolate mixtures! The staple colour of Cadbury's is purple, and even Bournville Station is painted purple to match! Cadbury's most famous product is Dairy Milk, a creamy milk chocolate, but they also sell a dark chocolate named after its founding location, Bournville.

 

Birmingham is a city with a lot of culture, world class educational institutions and modern charm, but throughout the city there are also many parks and green spaces, and a 3 minute walk from my family home there is a park. Bournville, Edgbaston and Selly Oak are all south of the city centre, and all of the southern suburbs have a park. British parks always have grass, trees, and greenery. Having a lake or a pond is also a common feature. South Birmingham also has the Lickey Hills Country Park, which is a bit like Gifu Park. The Lickey Hills cover a forested and hilly area of more than 2km². Gifu city has Mount Kinka, however mountains are much rarer in the UK compared to Japan, with hills being far more common.

 

To sum up, while Birmingham and the Birmingham accent are widely criticised in the UK, I think such criticism is unfounded! On the bright side, gradually these opinions seem to be changing. For example, a recent popular UK TV drama called "Peaky Blinders" has shown the Birmingham accent, which is called the "brummy accent". People born in Birmingham are also known as "brummies". Also, in 2022 Birmingham acted as the host city of the Commonwealth Games, resulting in more tourists coming to the city and experiencing its charms for themselves.
