日本の国技は相撲で、野球も本当に人気ですね。でも、イギリスでスポーツと言えばサッカーです。イギリスでは「Football（フットボール）」と言います。「Foot（フット）」は足という意味なので、まさにそのままの名前ですね。実は、サッカーはイギリス発祥のスポーツです。サッカーだけでなく、ラグビーもイギリスで生み出されました。クリケットという野球と似ているスポーツもイギリスで発祥です。クリケットはイギリスの国技ですが、現在は、サッカーが一番人気で、イギリスの文化とも言えます。多くの人がサッカーを観戦したり、趣味としてプレイしたりします。また、どのチームが何対何で勝ったか負けたかサッカー談義をすることが日常になっています。サッカーについて面白い俗語の表現があります。「Football widow（フットボール未亡人）」は、旦那さんや彼氏がいつもパブで友人とサッカーを見ていて、ほったらかしにされている奥さんや彼女のことです。

 

今からイングランドのプレミアリーグを紹介します。

プレミアリーグは、世界的に有名なので、日本でもサッカーファンなら聞いたことがあるかもしれません。プレミアリーグとはイングランドのサッカー１部リーグです。実は、イギリス全土ではなく、ほとんどがイングランドにあるチームで構成されていますが、、ウェールズの５つのチームもプレミアリーグに属しています。（イギリスには４つの地域があります。それは、イングランド、スコットランド、ウェールズと北アイルランドです。アイルランドは別の国です。）その理由は、プレミアリーグの前身のリーグが設立された時、ウェールズにはリーグがなく、その5つのチームは、イングランドのリーグで戦っていました。そのため、現在は、ウェールズにもウェルシュ・プレミアリーグがありますが、この5つのチームは現在でもイングランドのプレミアリーグに所属しています。

なお、スコットランドには、スコティッシュ・プレミアシップというリーグがあります。

 

プレミアリーグの歴史についてお話しします。プレミアリーグが設立される前から、イングランドではサッカーがとても人気で、「イングリッシュ・フットボールリーグ（EFL）」がメインでした。EFLは1888年に設立された世界で最初のサッカーリーグでした。EFLは現在でもありますが、プレミアリーグの下部（２部から４部）リーグです。そして、1992年に株式会社としてプレミアリーグが設立され、1992年8月に最初のリーグが開催されました。

 

プレミアリーグは22チームで創設されました。それは、アーセナルFC、アストン・ヴィラFC、ブラックバーン・ローヴァーズFC、チェルシーFC、コヴェントリー・シティFC、クリスタル・パレスFC、エヴァートンFC、イプスウィッチ・タウンFC、リーズ・ユナイテッドFC、リヴァプールFC、マンチェスター・シティFC、マンチェスター・ユナイテッドFC、ミドルズブラFC、ノリッジ・シティFC、ノッティンガム・フォレストFC、オールダム・アスレティックAFC、クイーンズ・パーク・レンジャーズFC、シェフィールド・ユナイテッドFC、シェフィールド・ウェンズデイFC、サウサンプトンFC、トッテナム・ホットスパーFCとAFCウィンブルドンです。

しかし、1994～1995年のシーズンからプレミアリーグに在籍できるのは20のチームに限定され、降格圏が作られました。プレミアリーグは毎年８月から５月までの期間で戦われます。下位にいる3チームは、EFLチャンピオンシップに降格し、EFLチャンピオンシップで上位だった3チームは、プレミアリーグに昇格します。

プレミアリーグの上位４つか５つのチームはUEFAチャンピオンズリーグに出場できます。UEFAチャンピオンズリーグはヨーロッパ全土のリーグです。ヨーロッパ中の強豪チームが戦います。例えば、スペインの有名なレアル・マドリード、ドイツのFCバイエルン・ミュンヘンといったチームはUEFAチャンピオンズリーグで戦っています。

 

プレミアリーグには、創設メンバーのチームだけではなく、イングランドのどのチームでも成績次第で参加することができます。創設メンバーに名を連ねるチームの中にも、成績がよくなくてプレミアリーグに残れないチームもあります。創立当初よりプレミアリーグから一度も降格していないチームが6チームあります。それは、アーセナルFC、チェルシーFC、エヴァートンFC、マンチェスター・ユナイテッドFC、リヴァプールFCとトッテナム・ホットスパーFCです。2000年から2010年までは、アーセナルFC、チェルシーFC、マンチェスター・ユナイテッドFCとリヴァプールFC の4チームがリーグを支配し、「ビッグ4」と呼ばれていました。2010年からは、巨額な資金力を持つマンチェスター・シティFCも台頭し始めました。

 

個人的には、私はトッテナム・ホットスパーFCのファンです。トッテナム・ホットスパーFCは北ロンドンのチームです。父が北ロンドンの出身なので、その影響でファンになりました！トッテナム・ホットスパーFCは1882年に設立されました。残念ながら、トッテナム・ホットスパーFCはプレミアリーグで優勝したことはありません。

同じ北ロンドンを本拠地としているトッテナム・ホットスパーFCとアーセナルFCが戦う時は「北ロンドンダービー」と言われ、地元の人たちは特に盛り上がります。同じく、ロンドンを本拠地としているトッテナム・ホットスパーFCとチェルシーFCの試合は「ロンドンダービー」と言われます。

イギリスでスポーツを見る時、ファンがチャント（応援歌、応援コール）をすることは普通で、ダービーの試合で対戦相手を煽るチャントがよく聞かれます！主には、冗談です。

トッテナム・ホットスパーFCのチームカラーは白と紺で、シンボルはボールの上に立つ雄鶏（おんどり）です。

 

サッカーに興味がある人は、ぜひプレミアリーグを観てください！サッカー選手の層が厚く素晴らしいプレイを観ることができるので、きっと楽しめると思います。お気に入りのチームも選べます！私のおすすめは、もちろんトッテナム・ホットスパーFCですが、最近は、優勝トロフィーに手が届いていないので、ファンとしてはガッカリすることがあります！

Le foot au Royaume-Uni

 

Comme en France, le sport le plus populaire du Royaume-Uni est, sans aucun doute, le foot. Le rugby et le cricket (sport semblable au baseball et surtout joué dans les pays anciennement colonies de la Grande Bretagne) sont également populaires, ce dernier étant en fait le sport national. Si le tennis a, lui, été inventé en France, ces trois sports ont eux tous été inventés en Grande Bretagne.  Le foot fait partie importante de la culture britannique, que ce soit en tant que joueur ou en tant que spectateur. Entre amis et membres d'une même famille, le foot est un sujet de conversation populaire ; et il y a ceux qui aiment parier sur les scores de match. On utilise même l'expression « veuve de foot », qui décrit une femme dont le petit ami ou le mari passe son temps à regarder le foot au pub avec ses amis, sans jamais passer de temps avec elle ! Dans ce post, je vais aborder la « Premier League », la première division de foot en Angleterre.

 

La Premier League est si célèbre à l'échelle mondiale que les fans de foot francophones en auront certainement entendu parler. La Premier League n'inclut pas la Grande Bretagne toute entière ; seulement l'Angleterre et quelques équipes galloises. La Grande Bretagne est composée de trois régions : l'Ecosse, le Pays de Galles et l'Angleterre, tandis que le Royaume-Uni comprend ces trois derniers en plus de l'Irlande du Nord. On utilise souvent « Grande Bretagne » et « Royaume Uni » de façon interchangeable. La raison pour laquelle cinq équipes galloises participent à la Premier League remonte à l'établissement de la division de foot anglaise, à la fin du 19ème siècle. Il n'y avait aucune division au Pays de Galles, alors ces équipes jouent depuis le début avec la ligue anglaise, et cette tradition continue. À l'heure actuelle, il existe le championnat du Pays de Galles de football, ainsi que le Championnat d'Ecosse de football.

 

Cependant, le sujet de ce poste est la Premier League anglaise, alors discutons de son histoire. En Angleterre, la « Football Association » (abréviée en anglais « FA ») et l'English Football League (EFL) étaient responsables de toutes les compétitions de foot du pays ; mais en 1991, 22 clubs choisirent d'établir la Premier League, devenant ainsi ses membres fondateurs par la signature d'un accord. En 1992, la Premier League fut établie comme une entité séparée commercialement de la FA et de l'EFL, et les premiers matchs commencèrent en août de la même année. Les saisons durent d'août à mai chaque année. L'EFL existe toujours et est responsable de toutes les ligues de foot en dessous de la Premier League. L'EFL est la plus ancienne association de foot du monde, fondée en 1888. La FA reste l'instance dirigeante du foot en Angleterre, et fait partie des associations européennes de football (UEFA) et de la Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

 

Les 22 clubs de foot ayant fondé la Premier League sont :

Pourtant, depuis la saison de 1994-1995, il existe une règle selon laquelle 20 équipes seulement peuvent s'affronter à chaque saison de la Premier League. A la fin de la saison, les trois équipes en bas du classement sont reléguées : la saison suivante, ces équipes feront partie du Championnat d'Angleterre de football de deuxième division. De l'autre côté, les trois équipes en haut du classement de la deuxième division seront promues à la Premier League (la première division). De plus, les quatre ou cinq équipes en tête du classement de la Premier League se qualifieront pour la Ligue des Champions de l'UEFA, une ligue européenne qui rassemble les meilleurs clubs en Europe.

 

En plus des clubs fondateurs, n'importe quel club de foot anglais peut entrer dans la Premier League. En fait, certains des clubs fondateurs n'y jouent même pas car leur performance n'est pas suffisante ! Il n'y a que six équipes qui restent constamment dans la Premier League, sans relégation, depuis son début : Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Manchester United, Liverpool et Tottenham Hotspur. De 2000 à 2010, les quatre équipes d'Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United et Liverpool étaient appelées les « Big Four » (les grands quatre), parce que chaque vainqueur de la Premier League de ces années fut l'une de ces équipes. À partir de 2010, Manchester City a également commencé à dominer la compétition, restant le club le plus riche. 

 

Personnellement, je suis fan de Tottenham Hotspur, ou « Spurs », qui est un club du nord de Londres, d'où vient mon père. Donc, j'ai été élevée comme fan des Spurs ! Les Spurs ont été fondés en 1882, et même s'ils sont ressortis victorieux d'autres ligues avant la création de la Premier League, malheureusement ils n'ont jamais gagné cette dernière (ou pas encore !). Il existe un « derby du nord de Londres », un esprit de compétition fort entre Spurs et Arsenal, ainsi qu'un derby entre Spurs et Chelsea, qui est également un club de Londres. La culture du foot en Angleterre inclut les chants pendant les matchs, et les chants se moquant de l'équipe adverse ne sont pas rares, surtout pendant les matchs de derby. Les couleurs des Spurs sont le blanc et le bleu marine, et le logo est un coq debout sur un ballon.

 

Pour conclure, si vous êtes fan de foot, je vous recommande de regarder la Premier League anglaise, car la qualité des matchs et la compétence en foot des joueurs sont élevées. On peut aussi se choisir un club préféré ; et bien sûr, en tant que fan des Spurs, je veux que vous les choisissiez... Mais ils ne gagnent guère de compétitions, et résultat, en être fan est parfois décevant !

The Premier League

 

Undoubtedly, football is the most popular sport in Britain. (In British English we say football, and therefore throughout this article that is the word I will be using, instead of the American English word, soccer!) Although officially, cricket is Britain's national sport and it also has many fans, as does rugby, football is by far the most popular sport, particularly in England. All three of these sports were originally invented in Britain, and for those of you who haven't heard of it, cricket is similar to baseball and is a sport most played in former British colonies, often now members of the Commonwealth. Football is a large part of British culture, and many people play it as a hobby. Beyond this, watching football and even talking about football with friends and family is also popular, as is placing bets on football match scores. We even have slang related to football, for example the term "football widow" is used to describe a woman whose husband or boyfriend spends so much time watching football at the pub with his friends, that she barely sees him! For this month's blog post, I am going to discuss the Premier League, which is the first division of football in England.

 

The Premier League is famous worldwide, so you may have heard of it even if you're not from Britain. The Premier League doesn't include teams from the whole of Britain/ the UK, rather, only English teams and a few Welsh teams compete. When we say Britain, or Great Britain, this includes Scotland, Wales and England. The United Kingdom (UK) includes these three areas, but also includes Northern Ireland. Conversationally, Britain and the UK are often used interchangeably. Currently, five Welsh teams play in the English Premier League, and this is because when organised football began to be established in England towards the end of the 19th century, there were no Welsh leagues yet. So, these clubs have always played with English clubs in English leagues. Now there is a Welsh football league called the Cymru Premier (Cymru means Wales in Welsh), and Scotland also has its own football league, the Scottish Premiership.

 

Regarding the history of the Premier League, in England the Football Association (FA) is the governing body that regulates football, while the English Football League (EFL) is in charge of the leagues below the Premier League in England. However, prior to the creation of the Premier League in the early 1990s, the EFL was the main football organisation in England. In 1991, 22 clubs decided to break away and establish the Premier League, becoming inaugural members when they signed an agreement together. In 1992, the Premier League was officially established with commercial independence from the EFL and the FA, and the first Premier League matches began in August 1992. The Premier League season runs from August to May each year. The EFL, previously known simply as the Football League is the oldest football league in the world, founded in 1888. The FA is a member of both UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) and FIFA (International Association Football Federation).

 

The 22 founding member clubs of the Premier League are Arsenal, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea, Coventry City, Crystal Palace, Everton, Ipswich Town, Leeds United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Oldham Athletic, Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Wimbledon. However, from the 1994-1995 season, a new rule was introduced which meant that only 20 clubs could play in the Premier League every season, and so a relegation zone was created. The three teams at the bottom of the Premier League table at the end of each season are relegated, and the following season they'll play in the EFL Championship, the second division in English football. On the other hand, the three teams at the top of the Championship will be promoted to the Premier League for the next season. In addition, the top four or five clubs in the Premier League qualify to play in the UEFA Champions League, which is a Europe-wide tournament which brings together the top European clubs to compete.

 

As well as the inaugural members, any English football club can enter the Premier League, and there are some founding clubs that are rarely promoted to the Premier League as their performance on the pitch isn't strong enough. There are only six clubs that have never been relegated, thereby staying in the Premier League for every season, those being Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur. From 2000 to 2010, four teams (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United) dominated the Premier League, earning them the nickname "the Big Four", as one among them always finished at the top of the table. From 2010, Manchester City also began to dominate the competition, due to the club being very rich and having a lot of money at its disposal.

 

I'm a fan of Tottenham Hotspur, or Spurs. Spurs is a north London-based club, which is where my dad comes from, so I've been raised as a Spurs fan! Spurs was founded in 1882 and although they have won football leagues and competitions that predated the Premier League, they have yet to win the Premier League. Spurs is part of two derbies; rivalries between clubs from a similar area, notably the north London derby with Arsenal, and a derby with Chelsea, which is also a London-based club. Part of British culture is to chant during football matches, and these chants often make fun of the opposing side. Unsurprisingly, these chants get particularly mocking during derby games, although these are usually just harmless jokes! Spurs' colours are white and navy blue, and its logo is a cockerel standing on a football.

 

To conclude, I'd recommend that any football fan checks out the Premier League, as the quality of the football played is very high. You may end up choosing a favourite team, and if so, I would of course recommend Spurs. That being said, as they don't often win trophies, it can sometimes be disappointing being their fan!
